Bizarre And Bonkers Restaurants Near Berlin Hotels
As one of Europe’s most futuristic cities, Germany is known for its modern take on art and culture. Modern art galleries sit alongside Berlin hotels that specialise in art deco. Whilst even the restaurants aren’t immune to some of Berlin’s quirkier charms, if you want to eat dinner on a porcelain toilet or sample the delights of garlic ice-cream then Berlin is definitely the place to go.
You’d be surprised to hear just how many people are happy to enjoy their main course on either a coffin or a porcelain toilet. Klo has been open in Berlin since 1971, where it was once one of three toilet themed restaurants, but although the restaurant has scaled back since its early days it still receives more visitors annually than Charlottenburg Castle. Sausages and sauerkraut are served in enamel potties and makeshift urinals, whilst beer is delivered in urine sample pots. Guests can choose whether they wish to enjoy their meal on a toilet seat or a coffin. Klo is more of a cross between a zoo and a theme park than it is a restaurant and the pet boa-constrictor, iguana and bird-spider are extremely popular with guests. The theme park element can be seen throughout the restaurant with swinging papier mache hammers and an alarm in the ladies’ toilet that guests will find themselves setting off if they attempt to discover just what the model Scot’s man is wearing under his kilt.
Garlic might be an aphrodisiac, but if you visit Knoblauch restaurant, a garlic-themed restaurant in Berlin then you could find yourself sleeping in one of Berlin’s hotels alone. This is because the restaurant specialises in food containing garlic, or knofel, as it is known in Germany. Dive straight in with starters that include garlic soup or a whole tuber of garlic baked and served with a buttered baguette. One of the most popular dishes on the menu is 40 cloves chicken, a whole bird cooked with a massive 40 cloves of garlic. Wash your meal down with a refreshing pint of garlic beer, or garlic-flavoured red and white wine. So while visitors who choose to end their meal with the garlic and mint may be heading back to their Berlin hotels alone at least they’ll keep vampires at bay!
