Holiday Accommodation In Spain Designed To Suit The Disabled Guests
Disabled accommodation in Spain
Mar Menor (Little Sea) is part of the Costa Calida and is home to the largest salt water lake in Europe with an area of 170sq.Km and a depth no greater than 7 metres it is a unique location. The saltpans to the north of the Mar Menor are some of the most important wetland areas in Europe with a rich and varied wildlife, and are particularly important for bird species of which there are many.
This beautiful part of Spain is quite unknown to many people and probably Spain’s Best Kept Secret is flanked by small towns, and wonderful weather it is here you will find Sun Mar Menor a self contained holiday house equipped for the disabled.
The average annual temperature here is 17c and the average during the summer is above 21c. The winters are very mild, very rarely falling below 10c. Rain is also rare here. With over 3000 hours of sunshine a year and the mild climate, the water here can reach 30c in August.
Home to three nature reserves: At the northern extremity the salt flats of the Regional Park of San Pedro are heavily populated with flamingos, herons, storks and other migratory bird life. This makes bird watching incredible! each time you walk into the park you can’t help but notice the huge array of bird species every where you look. Just five minutes walk from the house during June and September you can see literally hundreds of flamingos. Purposely made wooden walkways inviting tourists to explore the entire area with ease.
Along the coastline from Cabo de Palos, westwards towards the village of Portman, is the Calblanque Regional Park, a stretch of virgin coast with hills and empty beaches and then there is the Marine Reserve of the Hormogas Isles, near Cabo de Palos, which is world famous.
There is a Strip of land that is a unique feature in Europe called La Manga, it is 21 Km of sandy beaches and sea on both sides. It is the place for all lovers of water sports, marinas and beaches. It exhibits unspoilt clear waters of the Mar Menor, with its salty shallow warm waters and the splendid Mediterranean with its waves made for surfing and marine reserves, there’s a broad choice of water sports, including jet skis, sailing, scuba diving, kite surfing, boat trips and so much more.
A luxury golfing complex, the Mar Menor Golf Resort comprises a 9 hole golf with plans in place to be expanded to 18. Given all of these wonderful sites to see and experiences to enjoy accommodation has been designed for the handicapped in mind Sun Mar Menor is set up and developed so that handicapped guests can holiday and enjoy the stunning beauty in Spain
The house has a downstairs bedroom and bathroom turning the house into an accessible place for disabled holidays. The pool has also been made as easily to get into by placing a safety ramp into the pool. Whilst the pool was under construction, the builders added a ramp into the house (because there was already easy level access from the road into the garden) an exercise area with impact-reducing tiles was added.
Future development on the list contains widening the doors for wheelchair access and the option of renovating the utility room into a wet room with wheelchair access. By contacting us you can find out if the house is set up and equipped for your particular needs.
In conversation with the local agent we are told “a reservation from a Spanish family who had seen the house. Had brought their severely disabled daughter for a holiday – she was not only a wheelchair user but had multiple disabilities.” The agent made us aware that the family was completely ecstatic with the house and the pool ramp, she said the guests revealed to her that “it was just marvellous to see the look of genuine pleasure on their daughter’s face when she was having fun in the pool.”
In September this year a guest discovered an amazing, fully accessible beach about 20 minutes walk away, 5 minutes by car. “We observed as the lifeguards assisted a young girl who was a wheelchair user to use an amphibious wheelchair. I’d never seen one of these before. It’s sort of tricycle and chair in one with tyres tailored for the sand, a high back and handle for a helper to hold, and under the chair arms there’s an inflatable which allows the whole unit to go into the sea. The girl and her friend were sunbathing right on the water’s edge whilst the lifeguards looked after her wheelchair. I was really impressed.”
Having looked at the property, spoken to the agent and guests contacted for comments and any recommendations it isn’t hard to see why they all gave glowing reports and had smiles of fond memories on their faces vowing to return.
