Silly Rabbit, the CT Science Center Is For Kids!
The next installment in my impromptu series on kids’ museums in Connecticut features the Connecticut Science Center, which opened in June 2009 and intrigues adults who have not yet gone to see it. “I really want to get up there,” they say, and when I tell them I’ve been there they ask what it’s like.
“It’s great for kids,” I tell them, and I suppose with a cocktail party on the main level in the evening it would be great for adults, too, but that’s just me. On a random day in the middle of summer, though, you can bet there are summer camps barreling through every exhibit, crowding up the films and shows, and clamoring for front-row views of the demonstrations. With my life so full of Kid already, I can’t imagine visiting the center sans children. But the place does hold catered events, and the location, right in the middle of Hartford on the sparkly Connecticut River, would be a scenic spot for a party, indeed.
Since it rains a lot in Connecticut, our family trekked up to the Center from the New Haven area to occupy two little boys, ages 5 and 3, for the day. The location is easy to navigate, and parking was easy to find ($12.00). There’s a special on admission right now and everyone paid only the kids’ price of $14.00 (good through 8/31/10). Lunch for 2 kids and 2 adults cost $35 and that included the Cheez-Its I smuggled into the cafeteria. It was a good thing I decided to spring for it, though, because it was a welcome refueling that allowed us to romp through the exhibits right up until closing time.
The children really enjoyed the hands-on exhibits, especially an area built especially for little visitors called Kid Space. Exploring Space was also a big hit. For my boys, anything with the word “space” in it is usually a slam-dunk. We also enjoyed the robot room, where humans get to challenge a robot in a puzzle-building exercise.
